micro:bit Tin Foil Electronics

Welcome to my ‘Tin Foil Electronics’ block of lessons for the micro:bit. I have chosen some excellent electronics projects from across the micro:bit community and made them as simple and easy as possible to be re-created in the classroom.

I have purposely limited these projects to only use readily available items. You will only need crocodile clips, tin foil and plenty of cardboard/paper. No additional accessories for the micro:bit are required.

These lessons are designed for use for learners in P5-7 (Yr 4-6, aged 8-12) but could easily be used with older learners. Each of these contain:

  • A full lesson plan with links to all the completed code and videos used in the lesson (I suggest reading this first).
  • A Teacher PowerPoint which includes embedded videos for each lesson, code and question prompts.
  • A learner’s links document including links to code (this could be posted in your Google Classroom/Team/Shared Drive for learners to access during the lesson).
  • Relevant Worksheets for some lessons.

The suggested timing for these lessons is 1-2hrs depending on your learners and how complex you want to make the projects. You are likely to spend longer on some than others. I’ve made them progressive but you don’t necessarily need to cover them in order.

With all these projects there is scope to increase the complexity such as adding LEDs and servos. There are also many other projects out there that put together the skills learnt in this block to create really amazing creations. Check some of them out on my Ideas and Inspiration Padlet HERE.

There are also tutorial video versions of these lessons HERE. These are shorter videos focused on the main project of each lesson, designed to be accessed without the other resources.
